MDA announced today that the company's Research and Development team has formed a broad consortium of commercial and academic interests to develop a new software application tool - the Generic Hyperspectral Data Scrubber. MDA has been awarded a contract through the Canadian Space Agency's Earth Observation Applications Development Program to develop this software application tool. As the name suggests, the 'Scrubber' will reduce or eliminate defects that can reduce the quality of compressed image data provided by airborne and satellite hyperspectral sensors. Hyperspectral technology essentially measures the intensity of reflected sunlight, using more of the colour spectrum to provide a detailed fingerprint of the Earth's resources and environment. MDA is working in collaboration with the Canadian Space Agency, PCI Geomatics, Noranda/Falconbridge, the Pacific Forestry Centre, and York University on the project. The remote sensing community needs the Scrubber to improve the compressed data quality, processing speed, and accuracy of end products. In February MDA was selected by the Canadian Space Agency to design an Earth observation satellite mission that will use hyperspectral technology.
