For immediate release: December 18, 2003 MDA Begins Second Phase of CP-140 Radar Surveillance SystemRichmond, B.C. - MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates Ltd. (TSX: MDA) announced today that the company's Information Systems Group has commenced the second phase of a four-phase contract with the Department of National Defence to deliver a new imaging and surveillance radar system for Canada's fleet of CP-140 Aurora patrol aircraft.MDA is the prime contractor for the program. The first phase, valued at $12 million, saw the completion of the high level design of the new system and the selection of a radar hardware subcontractor. Phase two, scheduled from January 2004 to December 2006, is valued at approximately $100 million. It includes detailed design work, followed by the manufacture of five baseline CP-140 imaging radar systems that will be fully tested and qualified for the Department of National Defence. This project was first announced in January 2003. It followed MDA's successful delivery of a surveillance system for the amazon to the Brazilian Air Force in 2002. CP-140 Auroras were first acquired by Canada in 1980, and they're used primarily for maritime surface and sub-surface surveillance. When the upgrade is completed, the Auroras will be able to detect, track, and image anything moving on land or sea.
