For immediate release: December 21, 2004 MDA to Provide Key Solution for Future Space OperationsRichmond, B.C. - MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates Ltd. (TSX: MDA), a provider of essential information solutions, today announced that it has received $6.5 million CDN from Lockheed Martin Corporation to supply a solution for rendezvous with the Hubble Space Telescope. This agreement is distinct from MDA's potential award from NASA to provide a Hubble servicing solution.
MDA's solution would allow two spacecraft to rendezvous autonomously. The spacecraft that is destined to rendezvous and dock with, and de-orbit, the Hubble Space Telescope will use this solution. This precise capability for unmanned operations has been identified by NASA as one of the keys to future space operations. A similar MDA solution, the result of MDA's earlier 2001 $11.7 million CDN contract, has already been delivered for use in a military satellite mission projected to be launched within the next few months. MDA develops its rendezvous and docking solutions in partnership with Optech of Toronto, Ontario.
