MDA Helps Modernize U.S. Flight Route Design Practices
Richmond, B.C. - MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates Ltd. (TSX: MDA), a provider of essential information solutions, announced today that the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has awarded MDA a Cost Plus Fixed Fee contract with a ceiling of approximately US $11.8 million to execute the first development phase of a new Instrument Procedure Development System (IPDS) to help improve civilian and military flight route design practices, both en route and around airports. This award follows the program definition phase in which MDA, the FAA and the US Department of Defense (DoD) jointly defined the system and the associated business processes.
IPDS is part of a joint initiative between the FAA and the DoD to first create automated tools to modernize flight route design practices in anticipation of growing air traffic volumes and then to harmonize military and civilian air navigation in the long term. This first development phase will provide the FAA and the DoD with the capability to design terminal area flight routes that take advantage of the latest navigation equipment, resulting in improved terminal airspace usage and better fuel efficiency.
