MDA To Support Arctic Surveillance By National Defence

Richmond, B.C. - MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates Ltd. (TSX: MDA), a provider of essential information solutions, announced today that it has signed a contract for CAD $2.8 million with the Canadian Department of National Defence to conduct the Definition Phase for project Polar Epsilon. Polar Epsilon is a CAD $60 million planned project for space-based, day and night surveillance of Canada's Arctic and its ocean approaches.

Polar Epsilon will use essential information collected by MDA's advanced RADARSAT-2 satellite mission. The Definition Phase will define the system requirements and design of two new RADARSAT-2 satellite ground stations. When the main phase of the project proceeds, the stations will be built and installed on both the east and west coasts of Canada in advance of Polar Epsilon becoming operational. The scope of the contract also includes the definition of an information solution to control the specialized RADARSAT-2 maritime surveillance beam capability for the purpose of ship detection.

David Hargreaves, vice president within MDA's Information Systems group said, "We are very pleased to be the primary information solution partner for Polar Epsilon. The planned use of MDA's RADARSAT-2 data and systems by the Department of National Defence has the potential to dramatically improve Canada's ability to monitor its vast ocean approaches and remote Arctic regions."
