Demonstration Of MDA's On-Orbit Servicing Solutions A Success

Richmond, B.C. - MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates Ltd. (TSX: MDA), a provider of essential information solutions, announced today that an extensive series of in-space demonstrations of solutions for on-orbit servicing have been successfully completed.

MDA provided solutions for robotic satellite servicing to the U.S. DOD’s Orbital Express program. Launched in March of this year, the Orbital Express demonstration program deployed two satellitesone designed to service the other—to demonstrate the technical feasibility of satellite servicing in space.

A key part of the mission as the program came to a conclusion. MDA’s robotic solution was utilized to execute the world's first autonomous free flyer capture. In this operation, an automated robotic vision system directed a robotic arm on one satellite to reach out and "grab" or capture the second satellite floating in space nearby.

Mission-critical operations using a complete solution involving robotics, software, avionics, sensors, cameras, lights and ground control solutions developed by MDA were integral in demonstrating the string of "world firsts" credited to the mission -

• autonomous capture of a satellite
• autonomous video survey of spacecraft
• autonomous transfer of fuel to a satellite
• robotic transfer of a battery and computer to and from a satellite

The ability to repair or refuel a satellite can rescue or extend its productive life, opening new business opportunities for satellite operators and helping governments keep national security assets operating longer.

The Orbital Express Flight Demonstration Mission is funded by the U.S. Defense Advanced Projects Agency (DARPA) and led by The Boeing Company.
